They were able to plumb to larger depths, and probably did the logical thing that other groups had ignored at this point and actually did an investigation of Smith’s Cove.Īgain, nothing was found, although Bowdoin did go to take a look at one of the strange stones found by the Onslow Company over 100 years previous. In 1909, Captain Henry L Bowdoin and some men representing the Old Gold Salvage Group began their attempt at finding the treasure. With it now having been around 150 years since the first mentions of the treasure, it wasn’t looking promising for it to be found. 1561 – 1626 The Twentieth Century Old Gold Salvage Group. A map of Oak Island with Smith’s Cove highlighted. Numerous further investigations have been performed in the years since, but this is still the most reliable and plausible explanation. The flooding would also continue to cause a problem, and was identified as being due to Smith’s Cove nearby on the island taking in seawater, and possibly the source for a lot of the items found. Just like the minerals the Onslow Company found, other loose items were discovered, but nothing that proved the existence of any treasure. Over the rest of the 19 th century, numerous other groups tried their hand at finding the treasure, but their efforts ended similarly. The men tried to dig an adjacent pit to try and retrieve any treasure, but this also flooded, rendering the Onslow Company’s efforts a failure. The expedition was suddenly cut short however when the pit started to flood. Also discovered were earthly minerals such as charcoal, coconut fibre and rather mysteriously, some rocks carved with strange symbols. Men dug for a depth of almost 30 metres, with similar findings as to what McGinnis has supposedly discovered. Several years later in 1802, an organisation known as the Onslow Company launched an expedition to find the treasure, meaning that rumoured buried treasure was already established at this early point. Some even state the men involved found the said treasure. Other versions of the story however state that they just gave up out of pure tiredness. They were said to have found strange constructions of a wall-like structure, but decided to cease digging when a feeling of dread came over them. Remembering the old story from the dying sailor, himself and two accomplices set to work and got digging. This story, attributed to a Daniel McGinnis, was the first story about any treasure committed to print, appearing in 1857.Īllegedly in the late 1790s, Mr McGinnis was looking for a site for a new farm, when he came across a strange indentation in the ground. Could the treasure have belonged to Captain William Kidd? The Early Years The Tale of Daniel McGinnis Many stories abound about Kidd having buried treasure in numerous locations, and this former sailor stated that the treasure was worth an estimated £2 million, a value that would now be worth over 100 times as much in today’s money. The earliest known account of any mysterious treasure came from a dying sailor, who once upon a time had served Captain Kidd, a seafaring adventurer who had been executed in 1701 after having been deemed a pirate by the English authorities. Accounts of any treasure located in the island go far back, and with this in mind many stories, such as ones from earlier time periods, are not entirely reliable and are derived from word of mouth. While examining this mystery, as always, let’s go back and try and find out where all these rumours started. As it stands, six people have lost their lives while searching for the bounty. While many artefacts have been found over the years, none of these have been deemed to be the missing treasure the island holds.Īll of this is steeped in mystery, as well as talk of a deadly curse that is said to kill seven men before the treasure is found. Rumours of what this could possibly be range from pirate treasure and forgotten Shakespeare manuscripts to religious relics such as the Holy Grail. For hundreds of years, legend has said that some sort of treasure is buried somewhere on the island. Just off the coast of Nova Scotia in Canada lies the small piece of land known as Oak Island.
